story pieces: new chapter 4

4          As Aiden tried to calm himself, his thoughts returned to Ava.  He remembered the joy he felt when he opened the front door the night he met her, and saw her standing there with more daisies in hand, smiling beautifully.  They had talked and laughed for hours, and it was nearly 1 a.m. before she had gone home.  Smiling, he thought of their first kiss, only three short weeks after that day by the lake.  She was just about to leave his house after another long evening and her hand was already on the doorknob when Aiden uncontrollably grabbed her shoulder and whipped her around.  “Wait,” Aiden whispered to her, “don’t go yet.”

“Aiden, it’s almost two in the morning, I think it’s time I left,” she said chuckling to herself.  Aiden reached up to stroke her face; her skin felt like silk underneath his fingertips.  She looked startled, but only for a fraction of a second, and then she smiled, and leaned close to him.  As she closed her eyes, he couldn’t help but think about how truly beautiful she was, both on the inside and out.  He leaned towards her and stroked her cheek, slipping a fallen piece of hair behind her ear.  When their lips met for the first time, Aiden felt a warm tingling wave wash over his entire body.  Her mouth was to perfect, every curve of her lips was wonderful.  He knew in that instant he would be with her forever.  He wasn’t sure how long the kiss lasted, time had seemed to escape him entirely for those few moments; all his energy was focused on Ava, focused on every curve and dip of her body.  When Ava finally broke the kiss Aiden was less than ready for it.  “Goodnight Aiden,” was all she said, but then again she didn’t have to say anything at all.  The smile on her face told him all he needed to know.  If any one thought the couple was inseparable before, there would be no doubt in their minds now.  A month after, Ava moved in with Aiden.  After living together for about half a year, they wed right on the edge of the lake.

Aiden’s life with Ava was a sweet one.  She filled the whole house with laughter and cheer; her sunny disposition was infectious.  They could stay awake all night, just cuddling and talking by the fireplace; they could talk about anything.  Many nights, usually during a thunderstorm, they would dance to old jazz records and listen to the trickle of rain slowly falling from the heavens onto the tin roof; both finding the sound to be sensual.  He thought about their trip to Charleston on a weekend in February, and the Valentine’s surprise awaiting them there.  Ava had made the arrangements for the suite and made sure they had the best view from the bedroom window.  Aiden had made sure the entire room was filled with orchids and lilies; Ava loved lilies and orchids.  They were both anxious for the other to see their surprise, and equally stunned by each other’s.

Each memory conjured brought mixed emotions for Aiden.  He and Ava had shared so many beautiful moments together, yet he felt they had also been robbed of each other as well; she died just shy of two years after they had wed.
